We are now accepting leadership applications for the 2025-26 school year!
Please note that time commitments are estimates, and leaders may be expected to devote more or less time to STEAM News depending on the week.
School Ambassadors work with us to create a STEAM News chapter at their school or community. This means they'll work with us to find students in their school who are interested in writing for us and direct them to our website. This leadership position will help students support a growing teen platform by utilizing their leadership and communication skills.
Once (at least) two people from your school sign up to write an article for us, we will list your name on our website as a STEAM News Ambassador for your school. Anyone ages 13-17 can be a School Ambassador. There are unlimited openings for this position. There is no specific time commitment, though we expect school ambassadors to actively be looking for new writers.
Chapter presidents are also responsible for finding a team to edit all chapter articles before they are published and running a social media page for their chapters.
This position is open year-round, meaning you may email us to start a chapter at any point during the year, even after STEAM News leadership applications close.
We are looking for someone to be the network connecting the different STEAM News teams. Operations Manager(s) are responsible for the following:
Compiling the STEAM News publishing schedule based on finished regular and chapter articles
Delegating editing and graphic design assignments for articles
Updating regular and chapter Jotforms with article topics and deadlines
Opening up leadership applications in June
Hiring new leadership for each academic year (September/October - end of June)
Communicating and coordinating with chapter leadership
Communicating with leadership at the end of each academic year
This role is a tremendous time commitment and responsibility. We are open to the possibility of having more than one Operations Manager; however, we are looking for people who are responsible, proactive, and truly dedicated to making STEAM News run better than ever.
As an Operations Manager, you will not only ensure that STEAM News continues to run properly, but you will also have the opportunity to implement new ideas you have for STEAM News.
Students who apply for this position must be in high school and must demonstrate in their application that they are willing to make STEAM News an absolute priority for the upcoming academic year.
STEAM News publishes articles every week, and our team could use a hand when it comes to reviewing these articles before they are sent out. Our editors will read over and edit our articles before they are published to ensure they are grammatically correct, accurate, detailed, and up to the STEAM News standard. They will also create citations for the links at the bottom of each article. This role also requires you to come up with article ideas (at least three relevant topics per month).
To become an editor, we ask that you first write us an article so that our team can review your writing before taking the next steps. An editor must be in high school (grades 9-12), must be able to meet deadlines, and must be easily accessible via email and/or WhatsApp. They must also be able to write in English and have a strong grasp of grammar. There are four editing positions available. The time commitment is around one hour per given week.
We are looking for one or two Layout Editors to help STEAM News publish articles smoothly! Layout articles are responsible for formatting all articles before they are published, and then publishing each article on its designated publishing date. Layout Editors must also update the "Trending Now" section of the STEAM News homepage every week to ensure it reflects the engagement of STEAM News readers.
The time commitment for this position is roughly an hour to an hour and a half each week. Layout Editors must be easily accessible via WhatsApp and must be able to work well with the rest of our team, including our Operations Manager, who is responsible for compiling the STEAM News article publishing schedule and will communicate this schedule to the Layout Editors.
The main job of Marketing Directors is to help our team come up with ideas to promote our website. Whether it be a social media campaign, a different advertisement platform, or fliers, this role will require creative thinking and utilizing your marketing skills to spread the word about our platform and draw traffic to our website.
This position is open to teens in high school (grades 9-12). You will also be working closely with several other STEAM News team members, so being good with communication is a necessity. If you already have any ideas for additional STEAM News marketing, feel free to include them in your application!
Our Graphic Designers will work with us to create social media content that is on-brand with STEAM News and will help us grow our social media following. Each year, we accept around two or three graphic designers, who may each opt to have one of two roles.
One role entails designing social media posts to promote our latest articles. Though there is a rough outline to follow (which will be shared with you upon acceptance to this role), we encourage our graphic designers to be creative and utilize the STEAM News color palate to create engaging, aesthetic Instagram posts.
The second role entails designing general, promotional posts for STEAM News. These posts might be to promote a website feature, event, opportunity, etc. We will provide you with a list of assignments and deadlines.
This role -- open to teens ages 13-17 -- requires you to have access to and be proficient in Canva, Vista Create, or any other graphic design medium. The time commitment is around two hours per week. All work must be your own. We will tag you on Instagram and ensure that you receive credit for all posts that you design.
We are looking for someone to be the voice of STEAM News...literally. Our Head of Communications will be the person behind all STEAM News outreach (except for the newsletter). He or she will be responsible for:
Responding to emails
Adding upcoming article deadlines to the Google Doc
Emailing all writers who sign up for articles with a confirmation email
Following up on unstarted articles five days before their deadlines, and then cancelling necessary articles
Adding article topics from the editors to the regular and chapter Jotform
Responding to Google Forms submissions ('Contact Us', 'Nominations', etc.)
It goes without saying that our Head of Communications must have strong professional writing abilities, strong people skills, strong management skills, and must be easily accessible via email and WhatsApp. This role also requires working well with the other STEAM News team members. The Head of Communications must be in high school and must be committed to checking all STEAM News emails and WhatsApp groups at least twice per day. We are looking for someone who is very committed to this role, and who demonstrates strong initiative.
Do you know or have connections to professionals working in STEM, writing, editing, marketing, or journalism? If so, then help connect our team with speakers and organize online events for teens as an Online Events Coordinator. For each event, you'll be responsible for coordinating a date with the professional(s) (at least one month in advance), meeting with our team to plan out what the event will look like, and then leading the event.
This role -- open to teens ages 14-17 -- requires you to have at least one person in mind who you'd be able to get in touch with. You must also be comfortable with digital communication and have experience sending polite, professional emails. You must check your email often, follow up with guest speakers, and maintain organized communication. The time commitment for this is roughly four hours a month (one hour each week).
Our Outreach Directors will work with us to create each edition of our bi-monthly newsletter, which friends, followers, readers, and writers can subscribe to.
Outreach Directors are responsible for formatting each newsletter issue, compiling a list of all articles published on our platform in between issues, finding four recent STEM updates/developments to include at the top of the newsletter, and finding interviews/resources to include in each issue.
This position -- open to teens ages 13-17 -- requires you to be able to meet deadlines. There are multiple outreach director positions available. You must be comfortable with online communication, easily accessible via WhatsApp or email, and be able to collaborate well with the rest of the Outreach team. The time commitment is roughly two hours every two weeks.
The STEAM News Social Media Manager will be the person behind Instagram's @steamnewsofficial! The student with this role is responsible for running weekly Trivia Tuesdays, posting article posts and captions (which will be written and designed by the marketing and graphic design teams), and helping STEAM News take its online presence to the next level!
The STEAM News Social Media Manager has the power to make creative decisions for STEAM News' social media. You may start a Threads or TikTok page, create reels for our Instagram, or other promotional content. This student must also engage with our chapters on social media by liking their posts and adding them to our story.
The time commitment for this position is about an hour each week. We are looking for someone with a background in social media who is committed to taking STEAM News' online presence to the next level.
