DNA was first discovered by Swiss biochemist Friedrich Miescher in 1869. He denoted DNA as “nuclein” when he first discovered it by primarily isolating the component from the nuclei of white blood cells. Prior to Miescher's discovery, various scientists believed that proteins held genetic material due to their abundance within the body. Additionally, many scientists understood that proteins were made up of different amino acids and thought that this translated into the fact that they hold a plethora of genetic material. Miescher discovered DNA by accident...click here to read more

A new recessive syndrome was discovered through researching the protein complex COPI. The endomembrane system which is made up of vital organelles like the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the Golgi apparatus, and the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi intermediate compartment (ERGIC), is where the modification, packaging, and transport of proteins occurs. With each transport vesicle, protein coat complexes such as the COPI complex are also included, primarily involved in transporting proteins from the Golgi Apparatus back to the ER...click here to read more

This article summarizes research by Sohail Tavazoie, a professor at Rockefeller University, highlighting a link between Alzheimer's Disease and exhausted immune cells. Alzheimer’s Disease afflicts 6.7 million people in America alone, according to a 2023 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Using experiments on mice, Tavazoie found that microglia — immune cells found in the central nervous system – become overworked as Alzheimer’s Disease develops in their brains, leading to exhaustion. This is caused by the APOE4 gene...click here to read more

Technology has changed many parts of our lives, including the way we vote. In the past, voting was done on paper, with people marking their choices on a ballot and putting it in a box. This way of counting votes, however, took a long time and could have mistakes. Over time, technology started to help. In the 1960s, punch-card voting systems were introduced where voters used a machine to punch holes in a card to show their choices, which made counting votes faster and more accurate...click here to read more

Natural disaster losses, especially hurricanes, are increasing. Of the 363 billion-dollar weather disasters since 1980 (as of August 2023), tropical cyclones have caused the most damage: over $1.3 trillion in total, with an average cost of $22.8 billion per event. These event costs continue to increase as factors like global warming cause hurricanes to become more destructive...click here to read more

Incidences of PTSD in the minds of American adults have increased significantly within the past years, with about 3% of the adult population suffering from PTSD-related symptoms. These symptoms often include experiencing event flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety stemming from pervasive past traumas (Bison et al., 2015). The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the prevalence of this disorder in the minds of those all over the nation. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also referred to as PTSD, is a mental disorder that develops after exposure to exceptionally threatening or horrifying events (Bison et al., 2015)...click here to read more
