School Ambassador
School Ambassadors work with us to create a STEAM News chapter at their school or community. This means they'll work with us to find students in their school who are interested in writing for us and direct them to our website. This leadership position will help students support a growing, teen platform by utilizing their leadership and communication skills.
Once (at least) two people from your school sign up to write an article for us, we will list your name on our website as a STEAM News Ambassador for your school. Anyone ages 13-17 can be a School Ambassador. There are unlimited openings for this position. There is no specific time commitment, though we expect school ambassadors to actively be looking for new writers.
This position is open year-round, meaning you may email us to start a chapter at any point during the year, even after STEAM News leadership applications close.
Editor
STEAM News publishes articles every week, and our team could use a hand when it comes to reviewing these articles before they are sent out. Our editors will read over and edit our articles before they are published to ensure they are grammatically correct, accurate, detailed, and up to the STEAM News standard. They will also create citations for the links at the bottom of each article. This role also requires you to come up with article ideas (at least three relevant topics per month).
To become an editor, we ask that you first write us an article so that our team can review your writing before taking the next steps. An editor must be in high school (grades 9-12), must be able to meet deadlines, and must be easily accessible via email and/or WhatsApp. They must also be able to write in English and have a strong grasp of grammar. There are four editing positions available. The time commitment is around one hour per given week.
Collaborations Director
In the past, STEAM News has collaborated with several social media accounts and STEM platforms on articles and virtual events. The role of a Collaborations Director is to keep a lookout for opportunities on social media or reach out to social media accounts that might be interested in collaborating with us. This role entails working with our team to brainstorm growth opportunities as well as using communication and marketing skills to reach out to other platforms.
For this role, creativity and social media are key. Teens in 10-12th grade are recommended, but ninth graders are also welcome to apply. There are multiple openings for this position, meaning if just brainstorming ideas is your forte, or just talking to STEM accounts on Instagram interests you, you can apply for either or both. An Instagram account is required for the latter. You must also be comfortable with online communication and have experience emailing different organizations professionally. If you have any ideas for collaboration types, make sure to include them in your application! The time commitment is around two hours a week.
Brand Ambassador
If you follow us on Instagram, you can be a brand ambassador for STEAM News! This role is as simple as engaging with our posts - liking, commenting, and sharing them to your personal stories. By promoting us on social media, you will be helping our brand grow, and your name will be listed on our website under the leadership section.
Anyone ages 13-17 can be a Brand Ambassador for STEAM News. The time commitment for this position is less than one hour each week. The expectation is that Brand Ambassadors will actively engage with our Instagram account, share our posts to your stories, and encourage their followers to visit our profile and follow us as well.
Marketing Director
The main job of Marketing Directors is to help our team come up with ideas to promote our website. Whether it be a social media campaign, a different advertisement platform, or fliers, this role will require creative thinking and utilizing your marketing skills to spread the word about our platform and draw traffic to our website.
This position is open to teens in high school (grades 9-12). You will also be working closely with several other STEAM News team members, so being good with communication is a necessity. Graphic Designer
Our Graphic Designers will work with us to create social media content that is on-brand with STEAM News and will help us grow our social media following. Each year, we accept around two or three graphic designers, who may each opt to have one of two roles.
One role entails designing social media posts to promote our latest articles. Though there is a rough outline to follow (which will be shared with you upon acceptance to this role), we encourage our graphic designers to be creative and utilize the STEAM News color palate to create engaging, aesthetic Instagram posts.
The second role entails designing general, promotional posts for STEAM News. These posts might be to promote a website feature, event, opportunity, etc. We will provide you with a list of assignments and deadlines.
This role -- open to teens ages 13-17 -- requires you to have access to and be proficient in Canva, Vista Create, or any other graphic design medium. The time commitment is around two hours per week. All work must be your own. We will tag you on Instagram and ensure that you receive credit for all posts that you design.
Online Events Organizer
Do you know or have connections to professionals working in STEM, writing, editing, marketing, or journalism? If so, then help connect our team with speakers and organize online events for teens as an Online Events Coordinator. For each event, you'll be responsible for coordinating a date with the professional(s) (at least one month in advance), meeting with our team to plan out what the event will look like, and then leading the event.
This role -- open to teens ages 14-17 -- requires you to have at least one person in mind who you'd be able to get in touch with. You must also be comfortable with digital communication and have experience sending polite, professional emails. You must check your email often, follow up with guest speakers, and maintain organized communication. The time commitment for this is roughly four hours a month (one hour each week).
